PSD press release: COVID-19 update from the Ministry of Public Security

HONOLULU – The Department of Public Safety (PSD) has been informed that a deputy sheriff, assigned to the sheriff’s special operations section, has reported a positive test result. A notification has been made to the Ministry of Health.
The Oahu Community Correctional Center (OCCC) is reporting 522 inmate test results received as part of the mass testing effort underway at the facility. Of these, 110 were positive and 412 were negative. There have been 47 reported detainee recoveries. One (1) positive OCCC employee was also reported. Ongoing testing is implemented by OCCC healthcare staff, with assistance from the Department of Health (DOH). The OCCC has adopted its pandemic protocols to limit the movement of inmates. The establishment is in constant contact with the courts to inform them of the status and continues to conduct arrests and hearings by video at the request of the courts.
COVID-19 tests are carried out around the clock in prisons and state prisons as well as at the Saguaro Correctional Center under contract in Eloy, AZ. Latest test updates received for others correctional facilities are the following:
Hawaii Community Correctional Center – Seven (7) inmate results: one (1) positive, six (6) negative. Seven (7) inmates have recovered, bringing the total number of active inmate cases to four (4).
Community Correctional Center for Women – One (1) positive case for staff was reported.
Maui Community Correctional Center – Eight (8) negative inmate test results.
Halawa Correctional Institution – Two (2) negative results of the inmate tests.
The Department of Public Security (DSP) continues to encourage all staff and inmates to be voluntarily tested and vaccinated against COVID-19.
