DETROIT (FOX 2) – The former Detroit cop is now in the running to become the state’s next governor. James Craig is expected to officially announce his race against Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Tuesday.
On Monday in Greektown, the former Detroit police chief speaks about matters of importance to a governor.
FOX 2: “What role should the governor play in maintaining police morale, enough police officers, all that?”
“Let me say to begin with, whether you are governor or mayor, your primary responsibility is public safety,” Craig said. “And when you talk about some of the reckless comments that have been made by some who are sitting on the left, on the far left, funding the police, I think it’s the governor’s role to speak out.”
It was a not-so-subtle criticism of Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
“In 2020, she said she was embracing the spirit of funding the police. Now what does that really mean?” Craig said.
And on the eve of a more formal announcement of candidacy for the post of governor.
FOX 2: “Do you support a mask mandate in schools?” Or do you agree with the current governor that local school districts should have a policy?
“I absolutely don’t. Whenever you force it, look, we are free to make decisions. People should be making the decisions, not the school district, it should be the parents, it should be the stakeholders,” he said. Craig said.
FOX 2: “What can or must the governor do to stop the pandemic?”
“We follow science, not political science. It’s that simple,” Craig said. “I reject the mandates, I reject our government, saying that some entities, that if you don’t have fully vaccinated employees, then that’s a problem. It’s government abuse.”
But the former chief says he would use the governor’s office to influence others to get vaccinated, and notes that he was the first Detroit police officer to be vaccinated.
“When the governor was talking about vaccines, she wasn’t the first. In fact, all along the way, I don’t know how many months,” he said.
FOX 2: “Do you need Trump’s approval to be the next governor?”
“I would love his approval. I have said in the past, I have voted for him twice. There are many on the left who have buyers’ remorse for the president who sits there now,” a- he declared.
FOX 2: “Tat is the election stolen?”
“You know, as far as I know, voter integrity is of critical importance. I am not looking for an investigation,” he said.
FOX 2: “Fifty lawsuits were dismissed.”
“Well, if there’s an investigation that says yes, I haven’t seen that,” Craig said.
And finally, FOX 2: “What are you worried about?”
“What am I worried about? About my gubernatorial candidacy? I have yet to decide what might worry me about my gubernatorial candidacy,” Craig said.
