SPRINGFIELD, MA (WWGB / WSHM) – Mold problems are still a problem in western Massachusetts. The Roderick Ireland courthouse in Springfield is open again, but some local lawyers say the problems inside the building have not gone away. This comes as mold removal is underway at several local schools.

Last week, a group of local lawyers filed a restraining order in an attempt to keep the courthouse closed until further testing can be done. Today, a judge rejected this request, so the courthouse will remain open for the time being.

This comes after tests have been carried out in the building. Three areas were found to be in unacceptable condition, but the courthouse reopened at the end of last week.

Lawyer Jeffrey Morneau told Western Mass News he was disappointed with the judge’s decision, but not surprised. He said there was still hope of closing the courthouse. A hearing is expected in a few weeks where a court will hear their case.
“The judge relied a lot on the TRC report that was released, but since that report came out the images and evidence will be very clear to the court, but the mold problem has not gone away, remediation has not been successful and that members of officials, jurors, anyone with access to or using this courtroom are putting themselves and their bodies in danger, ”said lawyer Jeffrey Morneau .

Morneau said conditions inside are still not where they should be for people to be safe inside.
Meanwhile, mold remediation is still ongoing in South Hadley. High school students are still waiting to start their school year after significant mold was discovered in the high school building, which delayed the first day of class.
We spoke to Superintendent Jahmal Mosley. He said he had submitted a waiver to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, asking to be able to do distance learning at this time. A previous request has already been submitted but was refused.

He said there was still no specific date for high school students to start school. School officials, however, are hoping the students will return next week. Cleanup efforts come at a significant cost. Western Mass News has just learned that the estimated cost of mold removal services is $ 767,928.
Similar mold problems are impacting the town of Wales. Mold was found in the elementary school just before the start of the school year. Students learn there at Brimfield Elementary School until mold removal in their building is complete. This should take about two to three weeks.
