DEL MAR, Calif. (KFMB / CBS NEWSPATH) – Lucky puppies caused a sensation at the 16th annual Surf Dog Surf-a-thon in Del Mar on Sunday. The doggies rowed and rode in waves to raise money for the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

“If you get the right wave with the right dog it’s awesome and you get the big cheers from the crowd,” spectator Dan Dunbar said.

They might have sunglasses and mohawks, but these surf dogs aren’t beach goers. They are in fact seasoned pros.

“It’s fantastic,” viewer Joe Lynde said. “The dogs are super impressive. Looks like they’re having the best time of their lives. ”

Puppies proved that man’s best friend is capable of amazing things and raised money for a great cause.

“Amazing animals show the bond between animals and their owners,” said Jessica Gercke of the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

Last year’s contest was held virtually due to the pandemic, where they released a collection of videos from around the world. This year’s return to the beach is very special for those involved.

“It’s really, really nice to see the people here and how happy they are, and I think we’ve needed a day like this for a long time,” Jessica said.

The Helen Woodward Animal Center offers 14 unique programs, ranging from rescued dogs and cats to therapeutic horseback riding.

“It all really shows that animals are helping us and we are helping them, and we are really using that to create as many programs as possible to bring this beautiful love of animals and people who love animals to the world,” Jessica said.

Surf Dogs save lives as all of their registration money and sponsored donations go directly to helping rescued dogs, making their surf session all the more meaningful.

“We did well,” said surfer Micheal Willis, who surfed with Gilbert the dog. “We wanted to have as much fun as possible. It feels good to participate in helping humans give back. I felt like I was riding on top of the world.
